Austrian Eco-Label for Schools and for Teacher Education

The Austrian Eco-label for Schools and University Colleges for Teacher Education is an initiative that was launched jointly by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research. Therefore it rewards educational institutions for their commitment to environmental and health education, for promoting a socially cohesive school environment and also for their activities which are foresightful concerning a sustainable future for all. The criteria were developed jointly by the Austrian Consumer Information Association (VKI), Environmental Education Forum (FORUM Umweltbildung) and environmental and educational experts.

What criteria need to be met to become eligible for the eco-label?

There are several crucial factors when it comes to implementing an eco-label programme. A joint decision to go forward with the implementation, teamwork and external advice help facilitate the process. The requirements are flexibly applied and build on known environmental and quality programmes such as ÖKOLOG, QIS, Klimabündnis, Gesundheitsfördernde Schule or environmental management systems, including EMAS.

Generally, committed educational institutions already meet some or even all of the criteria. A check list (audit protocol) has been drawn up to help anyone interested to determine to what extent they comply with the requirements laid out by the Eco-Label criteria. Once all the requisite criteria have been met, the completed audit protocol can be submitted along with a current school programme and the mission statement to umweltzeichen(at)vki.at when registering for the audit.

Austrian Eco-Label for Kindergarten

Since July 2017 the Austrian eco-label is awarded to kindergartens, that apply the principles of education for sustainable development using them as a guiding framework for everyday life. The label was initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism. Relevant criteria were developed jointly with the Austrian Consumer Information Association, FORUM Umweltbildung (Environmental Education Forum) and experts in elementary education. It rewards kindergartens for their commitment to improve quality and sustainability in their institution.

What criteria need to be met to become eligible for the eco-label?

By applying for the eco-label the kindergarten agrees to implement environmental and health education, promote a socially cohesive school environment and support participatory processes. Therefore the institution arranges a team of educators and other relevant stakeholders, takes part in further training and uses the help of external experts. To determine to what extent the kindergarten already complies with the requirements laid out by the Eco-Label criteria, an audit protocol has been created. This is used during the final audit, which is carried out by an examiner.

Austrian Eco-Label for Adults Educational Institutions

The Austrian eco-label, which was initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism, is awarded to educational institutions that apply the principles of sustainable development, using them as a guiding framework for foresightful development. The criteria were developed jointly with the Austrian Consumer Information Association, FORUM Umweltbildung (Environmental Education Forum) and experts in adult education.

Clients look very carefully at the diversity of educational options available. They look out for quality education in order to master the challenges of the future. By obtaining the Austrian eco-label, educational institutions indicate that they are committed both to quality and sustainability.

What criteria do educational institutions have to meet to obtain the eco-label?

An educational institution needs to have its own educational programme. Sub-units of educational institutions can be certified if it is evident for which venue, including the educational programme at this venue, the Austrian eco-label is to be awarded. Facilities that exclusively provide informal education (e.g. advisory institution) or universities are not eligible for certification. For schools there is an extra criteria document.
