Land Grabbing - connected to soil

Land Grabbing occurs when land owned and used by local communities is leased or sold to outside investors such as corporations and governments from anywhere in the world. Much like other resources, land suitable for the production of agricultural goods is unevenly distributed around the globe.

Land Grabbing has become a widely discussed topic in the last decade. Due to the 2007–08 boom in food prices several countries have been looking for opportunities to secure food sources in other countries. The financial crisis and the reduced attractiveness of other investments have led to a “rediscovery” of the agricultural sector by investors. Consequently the interest in land acquisitions in developing countries has risen.

There are three broad groups of actors which buy land:

A first group includes governments from countries which are not able to provide food from domestic sources.

A second group consists of financial actors that want to create profit with investments in foreign land.

The third group is made up of large corporations which try to increase production by creating bigger farms and using more advanced technology than the traditional local agricultural or agro-industrial operators.


ABLAUF

Finding Data

The participants are divided into research groups of four or five. Using information provided on www.landmatrix.org, each group tries to answer one of the following questions:
- In which areas does land grabbing occur most intesively?
- Which countries are main investors?
- Using the “Web of Transnational Deals”, select the countries Austria, China, Indonesia, and USA. Which differences do you see?

For the second step each group presents its research findings in class.

Group Puzzle on Land Grabbing

Students form ARTICLE-groups of 3-5, which are provided with one newspaper article each (see below under Links).Each ARTICLE-group discusses and analyses the content of its article. The members of each group create a poster with the most important contents of the article. At least one EXPERT-student presents this poster to the other groups.

After completion the presentation posters are placed across the class room with at least one EXPERT-student remaining at their group’s poster. For the next step new teams are formed containing at least one person of each ARTICLE-group. Each team chooses one poster which is explained by the EXPERT-student(s) of that poster. After the presentation by the EXPERT-student(s), the team supplements the poster by providing information about their articles.

Upon a signal the teams change to the next presentation poster. This is to be repeated until each group has attended all poster presentations.

In the final step all posters are pinned next to each other and the core message (to be highlighted on the poster) of each article is discussed in class.

Connected to soil

All students form a circle and take turns passing around a talking stick. Each person holding the talking stick is to say an English sentence (or word) that is connected to the topic “soil”.
If the others do not understand the connection/association, the student has to explain or find another word/sentence.
After one or two rounds everybody names the sentences and words which are somehow connected to the sustainability of soils.

  • Interpret topic-specific facts and figures
  • In this exercise students read articles on land grabbing from various newspapers. In groups of 3-5 persons students create a presentation poster about their article to explain the issues to the others. The goal is for everybody to know the key issues of all the articles presented.
  • Repeat words and idioms on soil
  • Establish new associations and connections with other subjects and topics
